Mamas set the tone for our homes daily.
So you woke up on the wrong side of the bed and didn’t get a chance to shower like you planned? If you’re anything like me some days, that just might cascade you into an emotional downhill with a slumpy outfit and uncharacteristically low motivation to unload the dishwasher to boot.
I want to share just five quick things you can do first thing in the morning as the mother of your household to set the tone before all your little people are up and at ’em.
These are things I have seen the fruit come forth from over and over and over again, and while a few of them are hard to implement at first, once you’re in the routine, you will absolutely adore the opportunity to do these things right away in the A.M.
1. Wake up before the rest of your family.
This is challenging for me currently because I am up quite a bit in the night. If the timing works out right with my daughter’s last early morning feed, or I just happen to be up early, I will stay up which gives me the opportunity to do a few things to set up the house for success. Perhaps I even start and finish a hot cup of coffee before the babies are up. Shocking, I know!

2. Start a load of laundry and empty the dishwasher.
These two things alone ensure that I can dry and fold and put away laundry at the end of the day, not allowing it to back up throughout the week. And I can likewise prevent dishes from piling up next to the sink first thing in the morning as breakfast simultaneously gets started and creates its own tornado. It is a vital sign of my motherhood to try to keep the countertops clutter free and clean throughout the day. Right now, counter-level is one of my only kid-free zones which I have utter control of keeping tidy. You gotta take those where you can get them.
3. Choose a good playlist.
I like to put on vibey worship music that’s a little relaxed and open-air feeling in the morning. This literally sets the sound of your household and if you think about a good movie that has a great soundtrack, that background sense of time and place is kind of what you’re emulating when you choose a joyful playlist to create the mood.
Some of my favorite chill worship artists are: John Mark McMillan, Mark Barlow, Young Oceans, Philip Shibata, Jonathan Ogden, John Mark Pantana, Ethan C. Davis, Allie Paige, Dante Bowe, LOVKN, Josiah Queen (a family fav!), and Forrest Frank.

4. Choose a scent.
I love beeswax all natural candles with cotton wicks using essential oils. Otherwise, I will choose a lovely and pure diffuser oil. This is a beautiful way to enjoy a fresh smell in your home in the morning. We know scents are so powerful. They really are. They engage certain emotions and bring us to reminisce on past memories.
At our house, you might smell any of these wafting in the air:
- Big Dipper Wax Works 100% Beeswax Candles
- Eden’s Garden Friends & Family Essential Oil Blend
- Eden’s Garden Tobacco & Patchouli Essential Oil Blend
- Eden’s Garden Beach House Essential Oil Blend
5. Bake a loaf of fresh bread.
For some, this might seem far reaching because you don’t make bread…yet. You should be baking at home! It’s attainable, my friends. It truly is! My favorite person to learn how to make sourdough bread from is, Lisa Bass, the sourdough queen, from the blog, Farmhouse on Boone. Check her out for sure.
I thought bread was going to be so complicated and time consuming, but it is so simple once you’re in routine with it. And this is the ultimate way to have happy family members wake up in the morning. My daughter literally runs out of her room shouting, “BRRRRRRRREEEAD!”, when she smells a baking loaf or hears the oven heating. We have grown accustomed to a warm, fresh piece of toast with sausage and eggs and fruit for breakfast. It’s a nourishing way to just give your family a hug by the food that you prepare.

I hope these 5 tips are helpful. Maybe you just pick up one, maybe two, or maybe you’re ambitious and you try all five. You cannot go wrong.
Mama Knows Best Top Tips:
Mornings with Kids
- Spend one-on-one time first thing in the morning. Before the necessary diaper changes and rushing to make food for hungry tummies, share good eye contact and a big squeeze of a hug with each of your little ones. It goes a long way in regulating their emotions to start the day off strong.
- Let your kids cuddle with each other. After our second daughter was born, I could tell our first was a little sad to find out she already had competition first thing in the morning if little sis was awake before she was. I realized allowing them to cuddle in bed together creates sweet laughter and removes that jealousy better than anything I could do myself. Give it a try!
